Good Friday and Sacrifice

Good Friday is all about sacrifice, at least according to the Christian bible as I would interpret it. God gave her son to mankind to atone for our sins. (I’m not going to presume to explain that.) We did some bad shit and God said, okay, I’ll sacrifice my only son to make it right.

Most of us, myself included aren’t particularly religious but I think we can understand the meaning of sacrifice. It’s:

·  Parents giving time, sleep, and comfort for the benefit of their children

·  Partners compromising for the benefit of their relationship,

·  Friends showing up when they’d rather be doing something else

·  Soldiers serving to preserve the integrity of our country and way of life

·  Firefighters, healthcare workers, teachers taking risks and burdens for the benefit of others

·  Environmental choices that cost convenience

·  Activists risking reputation or safety for justice.

I’m sure you have your own examples.

Now, I can’t help but bring this back to contemporary events, how the American people have elected a president who not only does not admire sacrifice but maligns it openly. When speaking of Senator John McCain who spent time in a prisoner of war camp, "He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured".

Referring to American Marines who died in WW I and buried in France, he said they were “losers” and “suckers” He reportedly questioned why he should visit the cemetery, stating it was "filled with losers".

When comparing his personal life to military service, he said his personal efforts to avoid sexually transmitted diseases while dating in the 1980s and 90s was his "personal Vietnam". He has also claimed that his work building structures and creating jobs constitutes a personal sacrifice equivalent to public service.

Joking About Medal of Honor Awards (2024): Trump suggested that the civilian Presidential Medal of Freedom is superior to the military Congressional Medal of Honor because recipients of the latter are "in very bad shape" or deceased, whereas the former recipients are "healthy and beautiful".

This is the same motherfucker who’s sending men and women to fight a war he started and doesn’t know how to end. And, if he likes it or not, is asking to make the ultimate sacrifice while simultaneously considering as a pack of chumps.

So, this Good Friday, I raised a glass to Good Friday and all the sacrifices it represents, to all those individuals who have sacrificed their time and energy and lives to make my life better and the lives of our children.
